Reliance Jio, one of India's leading telecommunications companies, has joined forces with Luxembourg-based SES to unveil an exciting new joint venture, Jio Space Technology Limited. This partnership aims to revolutionize broadband services in India using cutting-edge satellite technology, offering speeds of up to 100Gbps. The move comes in the wake of Elon Musk's Starlink facing regulatory hurdles in India, creating an opportunity for local players to step up and fill the gap.

Jio Space Technology Limited, in which Reliance Jio holds a majority stake of 51%, will harness a combination of geostationary (GEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellations to deliver lightning-fast broadband to enterprises, mobile backhaul, and retail customers. With multi-gigabit links and capacity, this broadband service promises to significantly enhance digital services and applications across the country.

"We are excited to embark on this journey with SES to bring cutting-edge satellite-based broadband technology to India," said a spokesperson from Reliance Jio. "Jio, as an anchor customer of the joint venture, has entered into a multi-year capacity purchase agreement, with a total contract value of approximately US $100 million, to develop extensive gateway infrastructure in India and provide services within the country."

Jio Space Technology Limited will leverage SES-12, SES's high-throughput GEO satellite catering to India, and O3b mPOWER, SES's MEO constellation, to extend and enhance Jio's terrestrial network. This move is set to be a game-changer in the broadband space in India, providing high-speed connectivity to underserved areas and unlocking new opportunities for businesses, consumers, and the overall digital ecosystem.

Akash Ambani, director of Jio, also emphasized that Jio's commitment to fiber-based connectivity and FTTH business, as well as its ongoing investment in the development of 5G technology, will continue in parallel with this new venture. The launch of Jio Space Technology Limited marks an exciting milestone in Reliance Jio's mission to drive digital transformation and bring cutting-edge technologies to empower the people of India.
